Let’s talk SSD size.
If you want to change your M1 Air in a couple of years time then sure, get the base model. But I like to keep my MacBooks until a macOS version comes out that no longer supports it, so that’s around 7 – 10 years.
I’m a normal everyday user, I don’t do media editing, maybe a bit of iMovie once in a while but that’s it. I got a M1 Air with 500 GB SSD, 494 is available, so 6 GB (500 – 494) is reserved for use by the MacBook/macOS. I’ve got 160 GB of data, photos, music, apps so I’m left with 334 GB (494 – 160) of free storage. Plenty enough.
Plug in the same numbers but on a 250 GB SSD I’d have 84 GB of free storage (250 – 6 – 160). Fine for now, but would it be enough in a few years time as I add more files? Notice that by doubling my storage (250 -> 500) I’ve ended up with nearly 4 times more free storage (334 vs 84). So getting one with 500 GB SSD was an obvious choice for me.
For future proofing I also got 16 GB RAM, for sure future apps will be released that will gobble up RAM.
Thanks! I have been debating on what model I need since I will be using for video edit. I was about to upgrade to the 16gb model but a lot of people say the 8gb works fine for video editing!😀
If all you’re doing on it is web browsing and productivity it’s more than enough, especially if you have a gaming desktop in addition to it like I do.
Is this worth buying just for schoolwork such as Microsoft Office, internet browsing, Garageband, iMovie?
The best video that I ever could find! Thank you
base model Macs are a joke I have done extensive testing ions the base model and the answer is simple no the base model is no where near enough for any level of user I have also given a lot of info on this on my channel as well. I own both the base model air as well as I have the m1 mini that is a 16x 500 confiqureation and the base model is a joke
Denver Broncos!!
I have always used Windows. I bought a lenovo laptop renewed 2years ago. Its useless now. I just ordered my Apple Air macbook M1 through the Apple store on Amazon. I did a lot of research has a great performance nothing near the price comparison regarding Windows beats it performance. It certainly stands out more than most for the price.
Just buy 16 gb ram plus 512 gb storage. Its only 500 CAD so almost 400 USD. That for me is better than carrying a samsung ssd for 135 USD and not being able to upgrade the ram
I purchased this recently & I am really impressed!! This is all I need for my usage.
Do you recommend the base model for Computer Science majors.
How many Pornhub windows can I have open at the same time with the base model? Am I better off going for the 16 inch Pro?
I tried it yesterday in the store, the 8 gb is a joke, apps don’t opne immediately, which is a huge NO NO for me, 16gb MAYbe the best sol for me, but 8gb HELL NO
what about xcode? how does it perform?
Running Illustrator, photoshop, xampp running on the background while using sublime text, at the same time, Will 8gb be enough?? Thanks
“no thermal throttling and cold to the touch” is your computer a god cause mine does
Very helpful thanks a lot
So you think that the base model will last me 4 years as a college student who will be primarily using this laptop for assignments, zoom, essays, and YouTube as well as the occasional video streaming? I don’t know much about ram and stuff like that but I just want to make a smart purchase since I will be using this throughout my 4 years (through 2026) and possibly after if it lasts that long.
Basically this base model is totally fine and very cool and the rest of the models are just even greater if you want more.
Thank you so much
