my macbook pro is from 2011. i havent seen anything from apple since then that even tempted me. this thing, except for the display, is the opposite of what i want.

Remember now to use data encryption and regular backups because you can’t take out SSD anymore, so all your private data will be shared with Apple service in case of warranty claim. And Apple doesn’t do any data copying or recovery, so keep backup.

I have a question about purchasing the new Macbook’s if anyone can help.

I want to buy a new Macbook Pro for editing on final cut, a bit of coding on Xcode, and for just being a student (light gaming, web browsing and research etc.). My maximum budget is about £1700, which was far more than I expected to pay for a new machine but Brexit… Anyway, my question is: am I better purchasing a Macbook with no touchbar with i7-6660U CPU, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD and Intel 540 Graphics, or getting the touchbar with 3.1GHz i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and Intel 550 Graphics? I am aware that each of these changes in components are interconnected in differing ways. However, I simply do not have the means to test this unique case. If I could afford the increase in ram on the touchbar model it would be a no-brainer but right now that is what is making this decision difficult. I am not that fussed about touchbar, I’d like to be creative with it but it’s a compromise I’m ready to make if it will mean an increase in performance. Can anyone explain the disparity between CPU and GPU in this particular case?

Apple is now becoming those in-app purchases model for their hardware. You have to keep buying the dongles to fully get the most out of it.

It’s quite greedy practice. They can clearly see people would wait out for another year in hope to get some of those ports back. It’s funny you can’t even connect your iPhone directly.

Apple will not go back to nVidia; both companies are very much dickheads that want to max out their profit. AMD is known for making custom solutions according to the customer’s need (PS4, PS4 Pro, XB One) and they also needed to trim the GPU height down for the new Macbook to make it slimmer. nVidia would never go this extra length for a customer, their portfolio is what they have currently, period.
On the other hand, maybe a good sales point for the new MS Surface books, those have that extra bit of performance over the Macbooks, and are more pro-oriented…

Nice video. Given obvious emphasis on pro apps it could be useful if you could do a separate video benchmarking new versus outgoing mac book pro and of course usual rival xps 15. Both in say adobe and native e.g. Final Cut Pro.
Btw do you have an idea of how revolutionary is this new rendering engine within premier targeting apple native API metal? Could it be the end of the CUDA handicap ?

Could you do a CPU+GPU combined load throttling test, watching the clocks of each? My now last gen 15″ has the GPU clock wobble a lot under such a load, creating jank.

Great screen, thin form factor, no doubt some people will like this. But Apple’s moving further away from “pro” use. At this point, my Lenovo P50 is a much better “pro” laptop by basically any objective measure – more powerful CPU and graphics, way more ports, ECC RAM up to 64GB, and actually a wider gamut (100% Adobe RGB), more accurate 4K screen. Someone could still *prefer* a MBP, but only in subjective ways – it’s prettier, more fashionable, easier to carry in a handbag. Those are not “professional” criteria, however, nor are they all that useful.
