You a great photographer
“Because it’s the one I wanted.” Sounds like a good reason to me. I’ve been shooting Nikon for 30+ years and my first FF DSLR was the D750 (which I still have). I purchased a D850 in December 2019 because Nikon had a sale, dropping the price by $500 US and they threw in the Battery Grip (a $400 option) for free. At the time, I was not impressed with Nikon’s first generation Z6s and 7s due to short battery life, one memory card and no battery grip. While the second gen. versions corrected some of those issues, I am still not persuaded that I need a mirrorless body. Should I make that transition, I will purchase the FTZ II adapter as I have a LOT of F mount glass.
Personally, I think you made a great decision and don’t ever let anyone cause you to second guess that decision. The D850 is and will remain the finest DSLR ever produced.
Thanks for this video and I am now a subscriber.
Fantastic video, really enjoyed it. I bought a D700 at the beginning of the first lockdown as a tough weather proof camera to shoot landscapes. I use a Leica Q for street photography but it does not like cold and wet. Started buying decent glass, very quickly I was hooked and added a D850, absolutely fantastic camera and image quality is amazing. No regrets. Subscribed.
Let’s see what else is in your photography bag!
I stayed with you Ben. I enjoyed the video. Your compositions are breathtaking, especially the scenes at night. It is clear the D-850 brings you joy. Like you, I had to wait for a price drop. I also purchased the refurbished D-850 to justify the purchase relative to my budget. My first dSLR purchase, coming from point and shoot, was the D-40, then the D-700, which quite frankly, made me giggle like a school boy when I unboxed it and considered the heft of that camera compared to the D-40. And now, the D-850. I just touched the tip of the iceberg in understanding and using all the features. I have a modest collection of lenses and purchased pro glass earlier this year to complement the stately D-850. Thanks for your video.
I recently bought my first Nikon, a like new low click D850. I do love it and even though I want a full frame mirrorless as well I can’t see me ever getting rid of the D850.
the d800 d810 is still relevant today the d850 is most definitely in 2022 and will be in another 10 year, people get to caught up in chasing the latest and newest cameras and chasing them every year like mobile phones…
I just want to congratualte you on repairing your D7200… What a champ! I love the D7200, I have one as a back up, myself.
I love Nikon Mirrorlesss… Why? Because it allowed me to pick up a used D850 here in Tokyo for about £1250 mint . It came with a Neewar battery grip and only about 1600 shots on the odometer and the previous user said he’d moved on to a Z7ii….
“Because it’s the one I wanted …” Awesome. Sub’d. Just ordered me a D850 body tonight … no lenses ordered yet, hell don’t even have a memory card … lol … details I’ll get sorted. This is also the one I wanted. Cheers!
Do tell about the cage you have your 850 in! Please! Thanks!
Hi Ben. Loved your video and images you provided! You asked.. Mark from U.S. tuning in here. I still desire owning the D850 today (even over Z options). I’m on the fence since I still own the D810, which I’ve owned for many years and love it, and struggle with the idea of upgrading. Maybe I should focus more on glass? Dunno. Thanks for making the decision even harder. ha. Keep the videos coming, Sir. Well done.
You know Ben, I thought I was going to make some snarky remark about digging up graves of dead cameras (i.e. DSLRs) to revive in 2022 (P.S: I own the D850). Then I watched your video and realized I’d seen this bloke before down at Blackpool (in videos) and thought: Super chap and love his attitude. I shoot sports/wildlife/action in environments where I need silent shooting, 20 fps to 120 fps, smaller file sizes, deep buffer, black out free shooting experience, and the list went on. So, even though I still own the D850 (for mostly my screw drive lenses I don’t want to let go of just yet (i.e. 180 mm f/2.8 for portraits), the Z9 hasn’t left my hands for 4 months. Lighter (no) – 1400 grams with FTZii adapter. Smaller? More compact. I can’t argue with your “it’s the one I wanted” argument. It’s absolutely an awesome camera and with it being marked down on the used market, I can’t argue for those that don’t need the mirrorless bodies, lenses, and features, it’s a much less expensive way to get fantastic bargains in bodies and lenses. I love the D850 as I do the D500 and D700 for that matter. I had been waiting as a hybrid shooter for over 30 features to hit the Nikon Mirrorless world, and so when the Z9 was announced, I was all in. Now with Firmware 2.0 coming in two days, it’s going to be “Christmas” all over again. The shooting experience is so good, I haven’t been tempted to pick up the D850 (see the camera tears flowing) and shoot. Black-out free, 20 fps, silent shooting with WYSIWYG EVF has been a liberating experience. I’ve even shot in 120 fps for artistic reasons (and got the shot I was looking for with one take). While it’s a new world out there, the D850 is an awesome tool, and my last 4 years with it have been blessed. Enjoy, my friend. Hope to see you one day in Blackpool.
🙏🇳🇿
Does it have remote control features
I did something SO so so so stupid…. I Sold my D850 and lenses to “upgrade” to mirroless…… you have no clue how much I regrest my desicion. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING has the image quality and build quality of this amazing Beast. I will absolutley be buying it back soon.
Hi Ben what sort of lens did you use in this video? I own D850 myself and I am a big fan of a wide lens. 🙂
Not sure to buy a second hand D850 now, or wait for the Z8 which some are saying it wont arrive until sometime in 2023 ?
I predict in 2030 there will still be videos about the D850 and if it’s still good then. And the images will continue to speak for themselves, especially in the hands of a good photographer. Great work, Ben!
What a fantastic video. Loved your style. I have just bought a D850 and waiting for it to arrive. Currently I shoot D800 had it since new and never let me down. Never had a backup camera after shooting loads of weddings and family’s and now mainly sports since 2013. I dropped it in 2017 and cracked the case and it’s never missed a beat although I had to get a battery grip because I could not get a battery in or out of the original body. It is an Absolute bombproof camera. I find it hard to believe you only have 1.4 subscribers. You have another one now. I also loved your photos of Blackpool. I am off to watch some more of your videos. Thanks for uploading and see you in the next one. All the best. Adrian
I’m tempted to sell my D800 and buy a D850. Hence I looked at this video.
I have the lenses and like you, couldn’t justify Mirrorless plus lenses.
I’ve seen both the Z6 and 7 with the adapter and F lenses.
I agree they look so clumsy and unbalanced
I also have a D7200 with good DX lenses 😂
I’ll take my time deciding. It seems that ‘The World and his Missus’ are going Mirrorless, so there are a few on the market in good nick 📷👍
Like you I started with Nikon, as a matter of fact I bought the FM new in 1984 (Showing my Age 😂)
