In Arab countries the 1999 HxH version was very popular even more than Naruto and One Piece, it was my favorite show to watch as a kid and a big part of my childhood. Anime, in general, is very popular in Arab countries especially the 90s kids. That’s why I was surprised to see this anime being overlooked by many in the western countries. I watched the 2011 version which was what actually got me into the anime community. After watching over 300 anime and still counting, the Chimera Ant arc is easily the best arc, it didn’t have as many fights as other big shonen arcs but the writing and depth and themes and characters’ psychology and development are on another level. It gave every character the screentime they deserved hence being long and what’s more impressive is the consistent power system, they didn’t have ridiculous transformation and powerups and Mereum was reasonably overpowered and wasn’t violating any nen rules. As for Gon’s transformation, it was due to covenant restriction which was explained since the YorkNew arc with Kurapika, and the post mortem nen with Pitou and Kite. No asspulls or plot armor whatsoever and that’s very rare to see in shonen anime. Hunter x Hunter 2011 is comfortably in the top 5 anime of all time and the Chimera Ant arc was a masterpiece and personally my favorite arc in anime.
