If you think about getting a dt1990, id recommend saving a bit extra and go for the t1. Similar sound with better stage due to angled drivers and more comfortable. Much ear room.

Really interested in that Sundara now. I don’t usually spend passed the 200usd mark, but my best under 400 would be a lightly used Audeze LCD-2 rev 2.1 that i got for just under 400. Tho i wanna change it, but nothing can sound better at it’s price range

owning a 58x, I do wonder if the greatest difference between all the 6s (bar the 660, apparently more detail) is sound signature. they’re all narrow, vaguely rolled off and mid centric. No?

I know DMS doesn’t agree, but Philips X2’s is very good alternative to HD650. Not in terms of tuning of course but value for money and overal sound quality with better detail, huge soundstage and more natural balance. I’m kinda bored of youtubers constantly pushing those mid-centric cans like there’s nothing else on the market.

I’m just learning about the audiophile community and now I’m dying to hear what these headphones sound like with my music. In my regular consumer headphones, pop/hip hop sounds pretty good, but as soon as you put on bands like Thy Art is Murder or Rings of Saturn they sound like shit.

@DMS Hello fellas, been watching most of your vids from like 2 years ago (subs too on that moment) when i struggle at choosing my 1st “hi-fi” headphone and then choose the old beauty reference HD 600.
Using that till this day with my mini amp & dac setups [JDS Labs Atom + AQ Dragonfly Red], lately i want to dig another (maybe can be my last buy for this music hobby of mine) headphone that has different signature of sound (vs Mid-Centric, narrow soundstage type, “warm”). Budget kindly around $500 – $850.
Any recommendation for my doubt? [Based on ur vids my thought is the DT 1990 Pro or Hifiman Sundara or even Massdrop x Focal Elex].
Hope i can get ur reply here, thanks and i always will leave thumbs up on upcoming vids of your. Peace :3

Great and honest list! And the honorable mention… Damn. Right.

I have a DT 1990, and listen to it with the analytical pads and an Oyaide HPSC-X35 cable which really does make it sound better compared to stock. Very detailed, exciting and insane for a dynamic driver and the price. When I want something lighter, with less clamping force and a hair less intense I grab my 600 Ohm DT 990 Black Special Edition. Out of the house, Custom Cans modded Sennheiser HD-25 II with Yaxi comfort pads and yet another Oyaide 102 SSC cable.

Plenty of enticing options below $500 these days!

You should really check out the Drop + JVC FDX1, amazing iems with superb separation and clarity. Very comparable to my hd-6xx and not nearly as amp-dependant, obviously. Could have possibly even made this list 😉
