TLDR.: It’s a great product, but while using the microphone, the sound quality of the headphones drop significantly.

I got my XM5 a few days after its release, and for the most part I love these headphones. I mostly use it at home for watching videos, listening to music and playing games with friends. There is one thing, that i never see mentioned anywhere, but i feel like could be important for anyone who wants to use these headphones for calls on a pc, is how terrible the sound quality becomes when you have to use the heaphones’ microphone.
I’m not an expert at this, and I’m speaking from about a month of experience and some research i did online, but here is what I understood: If u are on a computer (I’m using windows, it might be different with other operating systems), you connect your heaphones and then go to the right side of your trace, where you can find the audio devices connected to your computer, two headphones will show up: one is the “Stereo” and the other is the “Hands-free AG audio”. The “stereo” one is way higher quality, so you might think you can just use that all the time, but that is not the case. The “Stereo” works perfectly fine, if you don’t use your microphone, however as soon as the mic gets turned on (you join a discord call or start a game with voice chat enabled etc), everything goes silent. This can be fixed, by switching to the “Hands-free AG audio” output on your trace, however if you do this, the audio quality drops significantly. With this quality, music isn’t really enjoyable and if you play any games, where directional sound is important (like competitve shooter games), it is basically impossible to tell which way a sound is coming from. And in a few games (I noticed it in the new Doom games), the mic gets turned on from the moment the game turns on, so you can only play them the with inferior sound quality, even if you don’t even use the mic to actually talk to someone.
From what i had found, it’s not a fixable issue, and if you consider buying these headphones you should keep this in mind. Like i have mentioned, I’m not an expert, but probably it has to do with how much bitrate the headphones can handle, so it can’t manage high quality output, with also input at the same time.

However besides this issue, I do think basically everything is great about these headphones and if this specific problem doesn’t effect you or you can look past it, I do recommend them.

Great video. Thanks for that. My key priority is taking phone calls and zoom calls in coffee shops and cafes, with lots of background noise and chatter. Is the Sony WH-1000XM5 good so that the person or people that i am talking to do not get distracted by the background noise and chatter? Do you also review earbuds – which earbuds would you recommend for phone calls and zoom calls?

loved mostly everything about the XM5. But the headband is way too narrow and not cushioned enough. I had to return them since they became too uncomfortable to wear after 30-45 min.

I tried the XM5 but as soon as the 1 hour mark passes, the clamping force and the shallower earpads really start fatiguing my ears. They sound and look great, but honestly I expected a lot more in terms of comfort because I don’t just use headphones for an hour at time. Decided to return them and go for the Bose QC45. They don’t sound quite as dynamic but are heaps more comfortable and have comparable ANC. At least, that’s my experience with this product.

I’ve been using these since the day they came out and honestly.. save your money people. Even with replacements the headphones randomly turn off and the touch function doesn’t work when you switch between devices. I have to turn them off then on for the touch function to work again.
