Sony headphones sound really muddy to me because of the emphasis on bass. Bose sound profile makes music just pop. I guess that’s just the way people listen nowadays because everything has to have that bass line going through it that takes over the sound. Bass is easy, bass is mono. That’s why all the songs have it. Don’t even have to be a musician to write “music” anymore. For an example, I give you “Fifth Harmony” where every song is one line and every song sounds the same.

I bought the Sony XM4 a few months ago and I couldn’t be happier. But I have a large home and so I was looking for a second pair of headphones for the other side of the house (first world problem), to avoid having to lug them around. Instead of a second XM4, I considered the Bose 700 and the new Apple AP Max.

Bose was a huge disappointment because you MUST install their app and agree to their very questionable terms. Why does it need 24/7 access to the mic? The sound is really good and the ANC is also really great. But the Sony is better in almost every way, except the build quality. Bose uses less plastic but that made it heavier than what I prefer. Sony costs much less, too. Sony beats Bose, hands down.

I was super excited to try the Apple AP Max. Upon unboxing it, I realized how heavy it is. It really is heavy. Too heavy, IMO. They don’t sound nearly as good as Sony and it cost way too much for what you get. Apple hasn’t been impressing much lately, and the AP Max was no different. I was hugely disappointed in it’s sound quality compared to Sony and the cost is just ridiculous. The Apple sounds really good, but not as good as the Sony. Sony beats Apple.

So I ended up with another pair of Sony XM4, and I have no complaints. At least I tried the others and can refer friends and family with an honest opinion. Too often we find fanboys of every manufacturer pushing their preferred products without having knowledge of their competitors. In my case, I prefer Sony XM4 over Apple and Bose for the aforementioned reasons. Now that I own two, I no longer have to worry about lugging them around the house, and I get the absolute best sound quality for calls, music, noise cancelling, and battery life.

Nice review. Would’ve loved to have a price-point comparison, as well. I’ve had Bose since the QC introduction, and presently own the QC35II which I adore. Been curious about the Sony’s since first hearing about the XM3”s. I think I’ll go with the 700’s since I can get them on sale. Thanks

Recently bought xm4, my Bose qc25 is comfortable much comfortable than xm4. XM4’s ear padding pressing ears
