I have a love-hate with the MX4s, the sound isolation and fit are the best of the nc-headphones but the touch sensitivity is as consistent as a 90s ATM. Frustrating to see the same symptoms as the MX4s.
It’s funny to see Linus comment about the amount of effort Sony went through to “get the colour as close as possible on all those different materials” – I’m sure developing his own merch has helped him with this insight and I like to imagine theres a materials team in Sony watching this video going “YES – WE DID THAT”
What? The inner monologue line from Linus. “That was the moment I realized that I have fallen in love with my 9th grade teacher.”
Sony is like android: let you customise everything even if it deteriorate your listening experience (and some useless or annoying option for most ppl like automatic switch mode)
And on the other side you have bose, which like ios doesnt let you customise anything, but it works flawlessly out of the box for most ppl.
Choose your poison i guess
I got to test both the Bose 700 and the Sony XM3 for a couple weeks each while commuting and personally, I didn’t like the sound of the xm3.
The noise cancelling adjustment was just not good on the Sony’s, it made the music sound kinda muddy, because any noises it let through sounded pretty bad and voices in the ambient mode were not clear enough to reliably understand.
The sound profile is of course personal, but I didn’t like it very much. Pretty much what linus described
The bose 700 had ANC that was just as good as the xm3, higher pitched sounds like voices were a little more noticeable.
But the build quality and feel! They were superb! The sound profile of the Bose was also more to my liking, being flat, with the very low base being a little pronounced.
The 10 step adjustable noise cancelling worked very smoothly and ambient mode was very clear sounding without impacting perceived sound quality.
They were also more comfortable to wear.
To me, the Bose 700 were just the overall winner between the two. And afaik, the xm4 did not majorly improve on the xm3’s shortcomings compared to the Bose 700
quite a different point of view than MKBHD Review
Sony: “Beige is back, baby!”
can somebody with a normal size head test headphones like this?
Walked into this anxious after all the XM4 criticisms from crinacle lmao
linus never do that cave man sound ever again
Headphones dont fold any more so case is bigger which is a downgrade. More plastic so while still feels great it feels cheaper, Cable still really short, no more plane convertor, loss of options button.
The rest of the features are really good but it is not really an upgrade as you would want if you have the MX-4. It also still has some of the same sound option limitations rivals have sorted and fans of the MX-4’s were hoping they would update.
cable is pretty useful during flights
Should have compared them to XM4
Onboard airline entertainment still needs a cable doesn’t it?
When doing reviews/first impressions of headsets could you please include a mic-test (all connections (BT, wired, dongle))?
(A good mic often is the difference between “I can use these” and “I’ll just keep a normal wired earbud headset in my pocket for if I get calls”).
That’s the second withings watch I have seen on you, in the last few videos. Is a review on the way?
Maybe your voice is just always annoying, Linus and you’re just now realizing thanks to Sony. 🙂
I own WH1000xm3 and wf1000xm4, I think stories are pretty similar. Rich in features, mediocre at best in audio experience…
From “Speech-to-chat” mode back to NC mode, there should have an option to choose from 5/10/15/20 second?
I don’t know why Sony doesn’t market their NC comfort for people with sensitive ears, perhaps it’s one of those things that the people who need to know will know and try before buying. Before buying a pair of the XM3s I tried both the Sennheiser PXC 550 and Bose QC35 and both of them the NC built up so much pressure against my ear drums that it was extremely uncomfortable (like the feeling of going to the bottom of a deep pool), the XM3s on the other hand were perfect, not as strong NC but enough and no pressure in my ears
