Yeah.. sorry no. The idea is sound, but it’s just too expensive. Especially considering the MANY drawbacks. For example, I don’t get the idea of using personal interfaces. Sure it SOUNDS good, but is it REALLY necessary? A standard interface would work just as well. Failing that, why not just produce the interface separate to the main unit, attached with velcro or magnets – that would cut costs for sure as the unit itself could be easily mass-produced.
Why does it NEED to use ancient, ageing base stations? The Quest Pro controllers have cameras FFS – it’s just a little bit lazy I’m afraid. And no IPD? I think this is just a headshot to the success of this thing – eyes do NOT stay the same. My prescription has changed 3 times in 10 years, due to y’know, getting older? Making this thing specific to a pair of eyes TODAY will NOT work for those same eyes in a year? 2 years?
Ultimately, this is a niche product, for a niche group of people who seemingly forget the rest of the world exist. I’m starting to think certain people live in a VR bubble, oblivious to others who might like to get into VR but wouldn’t ‘appreciate’ modern features. I think the PSVR2 is going to be a bit of a wakeup call to the VR community – devs and users – especially when the inevitable price drop happens.
Finally, once again, we have a VR device at $1000+. We have enough of these, with ‘cool’ tech and ‘exclusive’ features – but to the VAST MAJORITY of people who want to experience good VR beyond the (quite old at this point) Quest 2… well, I guess the Quest 3 is coming. Although considering the way Zuck is behaving, I’m expecting that to be $600+ – further eliminating all but the most ardent VR fans – not NEW players, which the industry desperately needs.
My biggest concern with a personalized device like this is the footprint it’s going to leave when people grow out of these
Like physically grow out
I don’t have glasses myself so I don’t know how often the lenses will be swapped out due to them being based on your prescription but I know it will happen
The fact that you can’t really sell them when you’re done or repurpose the parts makes it seem like when you’re done with it then it’s just going to be quite a bit of junk in the end
This looks amazing. It makes me excited for the future of VR even though I won’t get one. Much love all!
I wonder if they could do instead of an onboard battery pack something like a vest or something that can provide power but not throw off balance
Using that hmd with a set of airpods seems like a super comfy experience, I come from the old vive and the index since 2020 and shit. This is the first headset I consider buying from just one video since .. forever
Appreciate so much the PCVR love, the DP cable, the micro-display, the pancake lenses. But FOV is small for 2023 standard, especially the hFOV, just 93°. Plus, don’t exchange lightouse tracking for PCVR, they are not the same thing. Lighthouse is bulky, expensive and tricky, I prefer self-tracking HMD even on PC
Amazing video, can’t wait for a full review!
honestly thats a perfectly averagely sized headset if you ask me
more than big enough
infact maybe too big
Way too expensive…
so a fully functional version of this headset would be $2-4K … .. big nope for me especially with future proofing in mind .. no IPD adjustment so you would have to buy it again as you age up (my IPD has shifted a bit over 2 years time so that would be a $999 paperweight after 2-4 years)
It better at least come with a really long usb cable for that price!
This is exactly what pcvr-only users need
i Want it with eye tracking in it !
I really dont like that they custom make everything for you and thats for 1 word
e-waste
if its custom tailored to you then no one else can buy it used off you, so if you upgrade your headset down the line, well the Beyond just became e-waste, to end up in a landfill, sure you could custom order someone elses facial interface but thats work people wont do
it gets rid of 1 of the 3 Rs, reuse, no one else can reuse the headset, I know its a small thing but it adds to the ever-growing problem of e-waste and its something I personally can’t justify adding to, I make sure my old tech gets reused in some way, whether that means sold or repurposed and not really having a good option to do either with this headset is a huge turn off for me
I’m sticking with my index until it breaks and Valve won’t replace it. If that happens, ill definitely be considering this.
imo its really dumb to do what they’re doing. The price is pretty ridiculous for this device and it’s mainly because of all these custom things they are doing. What they should be doing is selling the base headset much cheaper with an ipd slider and a more general face plate. Then they should be selling the more customized face plates separately as an addon for the people that really care about that or need it. I genuinely couldn’t see myself spending almost $1500 CAD on a headset on its own, especially as someone with an index. I understand the standpoint of it being for people already in the steamvr space, but at the same time as someone with an index already in the steamvr space, justifying spending so much on a device thats only a better version of the already great thing i have is hard
Another 5 years down the line, a standalone version of this could be the standard.
if only i had money 🥲
If I could use this with my laptop on planes to work, I would buy It. I like the basestation tracking, but would love an accessory for when I’m plugged into a laptop on the go. Super exciting to see a small company making such a great headset.
yo what
