Great thoughts on the distortion!
Interesting that he mentioned that the pads dont matter that much. When I changed my pads the sound changed significantly to my ears.
Just buy an Audeze, then don’t look at reviews, headphone forums ever again;) do that and you’ll save a lot of money 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I tried very much to like the HD 6XX. I got a nice amp, a custom balanced cable, and did the software EQ on my PC, but the clamp pressure made them too painful to wear. I tried gently bending them outward many times, and left them extended over a box when not in use, hoping that they would become used to the shape and clamp my poor head less. After 6 weeks of getting a bad headache immediately after putting them on, I abandoned the 6XX. No sound quality is worth that kind of physical pain.
I’m now using the Hifiman Sundara (2020 rev) and I’m very happy. No pain, and they sound wonderful after EQ.
Great vid and superb interview
The audio quality of this video speaks for itself. I mean, I want to repeat it when I get those HE 9600S, which were the only ones on my budget lol
What about low-cost low-ohm heroes, like Grado’s Prestige Series, Samson SR850, Audio-Technica M50X, Sony MDR 7506, Sennheiser HD280, Koss KPH30i, AKG K240?
Gonna be completely honest, I hit the like button before I watched because I already knew the vid was gonna be fire 😀
48hrs ago I’d never even heard of open back headphones, Today I picked up a some Philips Fidelio X2HR’s and I’m in love.
Now I’m looking at getting a JDS Labs Atom amp and possibly a dedicated DAC after that.
Lots to learn but it’s really interesting!
Where would you put the Focal Clear?

I blame dankpods for becoming an audiophile.
Planning to get Beyerdynamics DT770 Pros sooner or later :v
I wish a reviewer would pickup a set of beyerdynamic ‘custom game’ (32ohm 96db spl) headphones and put them up against other gaming/audiophile headphones, i’ve had mine a fair while running on a schiit magni heresey/modi 3+/Loki mini + and am struggling to think which way to move next as this setups pretty damn sweet.
I don’t consider myself an audiophile, but it’s kinda interesting to see that you’ve basically completely avoided closed backs on the ‘entry-level’ end of things.
The point of entry level is to provide a massively better sound than what people are used to, at an affordable price point that doesn’t require a ton of investment. There are a lot of 100-150 dollar closed backs that do provide way better sound quality than the ‘headphones are headphones’ types are used to, without having the cost increase that is typically associated with the manufacturing of open-backs, nor having the ‘annoyance’ that many people new to higher end sound feel when using open-backs and not having any sort of noise filtering.
For entry level stuff, I’d think it’s better to recommend something that can be used as a nigh-universal ‘daily wear’ headphone, that will work for pretty much any use case short of exercising.
This gets people’s feet in the door while still having the promise of new and exciting open-backs to try out later if they are still interested. It’s much easier to justify the investment (no matter how relevant in size you feel the investment is) for something for all situations, then it is for something that you can’t really use around others without them being annoyed by hearing your particular favored noise, or in ‘busy’ environments where outside noise can interfere.
A very well-put video actually.
6:23 🙂
This deserves more views, man. Excellent video.
Damn, the Level transition sound is insane, my Anger q30 just. went crazy!
Frequency response: Are you saying that the bode plot doesn’t matter? I feel like how the headphones sound over the frequency range is probably the most important thing to me. This site seems to have such plots for most headphones on the market (example: https://reference-audio-analyzer.pro/en/report/hp/sennheiser-hd-600.php#gsc.tab=0)
