My advice; don’t get into this hobby. It’s a rabbit hole you don’t want to fall into.
Eric hears
HifiMan Sundara Frequency Response: 6Hz – 75kHz.. surely this is pointless! or is it? I have a pair of Sundara’s myself coupled to a Schiit Modius/Asgard/Loki. sounds excellent. I would certainly recommend the Sundara’s … I listen with headphones all the time, I don’t have anything else. Love the channel.
aw shit lowkey abyss add
Absolutely love this video
ABYSS = SNAKE OIL
Consider adding segmented chapters to the scrub bar. And why little to no mention of dacs?
Josh – First: I have to credit you for having the humility to be up-front on your self-awareness. Many would have tried to tackle “expert” themselves. I’m not sure it would have occurred to me to interview an industry leader, and might have tried to “muddle through” it myself based on what I’ve learned from others, so a COMPLETE “hats off” to you! Second: Great overview. Well produced, and easy to digest for multiple levels of audio confidence in your audience. Well-done!
“the cabling” LMAO oh abyss
Distortion in headphones is a thing. You can experiment with a Sony’s $9 usd that amirm did the measurements in ASR forum. It’s clear where the distortion is in the frequency band and where is not…
In a video aiming at beginners especially, I’d suggest mentioning the brand in addition to the model name when talking about specific headphones
Such a great video! Really enjoyed the conversation with Eric. Well done!
Audiophile generally mean “no bass”. Literally, they all have severe roll off around 100hz and decline so much that you get no bass response. And if you try to EQ bass back into most “audiophile” headphones, you end up with mechanical noise because the speaker can’t handle it.
HIFIMAN Sundara. Not bad, NEEDS EQ to sound proper. Firstly you gotten drop the 8khz range by like 8db. Its way too sharp. For me, dropping about 6db cured it and make that bump neutral which is what you want, flat eq curves and all. And then for bass, yes it has bass, but still not a lot because its open back. Luckily, you can add the bass back in and get it to true neutral. A few DB at 32hz and 60hz does the trick. And then its relatively flat EQ response.
Sony MDR-1AM2 are pretty neutral flat from design. Which in my opinion are the best for those using portable music players and cellphones, as you don’t need huge power to drive them like the Sundara’s…..
And then, the Sony MDR-Z7M2. Fucking bliss. Much better than the 1AM2 in terms of treble and overall response. STILL has neutral bass. Just lovely sound signature. But, needs more power to drive, similar to how the Sundara’s are hard to drive.
These would be my ONLY recommendation for those looking to get into headphones. The first two can be found for about $300 and the Z7M2 for $600…. I wont touch most other brands, I mean I have, but I wont recommend them or use them ever again. They just lack in sound quality. The whole point of wanting pure audio is to have a flat eq response. But sadly, most Audiophile headphones especially in the upper price range, have NO BASS. And they usually have ear blistering high’s which is great for people going deaf, but not for those of us with normal hearing…. Sennheiser. I have owned pairs ranging from 60 bucks to 300 bucks. They all suck. Sure, they are spacy, give a good “sound stage” but NO BASS. Funny enough, my brother bought their $1600 HD800s Reference…. and sure enough, they actually had proper neutral bass. Blows me away that for THAT company, you have to spend that much for neutral bass, when you could just buy much cheaper Sony products.
Also a note for those reading this, headphones have flavors. Most audiophile headphones cater to old people who “turn that damn bass down” even though its set to a neutral level. I don’t understand why they would gimp their music. Because no bass means not hearing the detail the person who created the music, wants you to hear. Some headphones are good for vocals, some are V shape where you have a lot of bass, no mid range, and a lot of treble (beats by dr. dre for example). Then you have Sony Extra-bass which are horrible, sure they have head shaking bass but the bass is so harsh that you lose your treble completely thus losing detail and music sounding dull, but I wouldn’t recommend those extra-bass headphones either.
What a video!
What do you think of Shure Aonic 50 headphone?
Really good video. I wish this video existed when I started about 7 years ago.

Hi, Josh! I have been following you for quite some time. Just have a quick question for you.
Do you think SMSL SU-9 and SH-9 will be good enough to power hifiman Arya? Thanks and keep up the good work!!!!
