From Canon, we do not need another camera, we need more overall zoom with faster aperture and third party 1.4 aperture lens.
Sounds like a T7 replacement. I will take that 28mm for my R7
Here in south America the cheaper, the better. There is a big market for cheapo small interchangeable lenses cameras. Canon sold a lot of its cheap DSLR, and a lot of its cheap M line like M100 and M50. Brands can sell that kind of cameras with little or near no profit for them, but cheap entry level have a more important role than profit: attract new customers to the brand, offer an alternative in low cost segment, start building loyalty to a brand, expand the second hand market, etc. Canon is building its omnipresence that makes them then number one. The key is when you ask to the general public what price they would pay for a camera they say $500usd here in south America. Canon is building the future of the brand
I could see this been a replacement for the kiss/Rebel line replacement. Here in the statea the T7 2 lens kits sells for around 500. And i see a lot of people getting these.
The rumored camera makes sense to me. It is an entry level camera comparable to EOS xxxxD DSLRs.
The Canon DSLR lineup was divided into four clearly defined basic lines; Entry Level (xxxxD), Beginner (xxxD), Enthusiast (xxD), and Advanced (xD).
The Canon MILC lineup of R series bodies is not clearly defined, at least not yet to me. The model numbers are mashup.
Signs keep popping up, that say no professional photography. I would be stopped if I had my 77D, but the m100 and 22mm prime can get me past the Karens. So a replacement for the m100 with a pancake prime would be an interest to me.
The problem is that in EF(-S) days, you could get a cheap Rebel and gradually buy into better Canon gear. It’s too steep on RF, especially on lens side.
Hi Simon, after introducing a lot amazing tech of the larger FF bodies since Canon and Nikon moved over to mirrorless, it’s logical this now starts to trickle down to APS-C. Those systems are needed to temp new people into photography/filmography. I can’t imagine many people jumping straight from a smartphone to an R5 .. And there’s an audience for decent quality tools in a discrete (&small) package.
As for the R100, there’s always room to further “segment” things down (avoiding the C hammer line). For example by having some internal memory, but no SD card, and instead offer streaming/posting to your socials. Or just a tiny micro-SD card like smartphones.
I am pro more affordable entry level bodies that are feature-packed with all the latest tech. Who knows, maybe enough good ones might convince young content creators to appreciate a dedicated imaging device. But they really need to be very good at what they do and offer some very smart and easy point-and-shoot mode, use tons of computational photography, and use interactive menus to teach photography/videography in a fun and engaging way. If not, I don’t see how they can convince these youngsters to upgrade from their smart phones.
Canon is killing me! I just bought the R50. I now own the R7 & R10 too. Now they have the R100. I am running out of space to store all of my cameras. That means I am going have to create another studio. I have 5 now. That leaves the backyard shed and the garage. Well there is the master bedroom closet. Congratulations again for reaching 40k subscribers. Cheers!
Interesting to see Canon expand its RF lineup. Still waiting for the R5 firmware update though 😢
this is the camera nobody wanted to build because of the low margin of profit. I wanted to buy my dauther a camera, and mirrorless was my logical path BUT there were no economical options, just the around 7-900 USD and I went with the Nikon D3500 (I have nikon cameras) so if this Canon R100 had being around, I would have buy that.
I get it, the USA is a rich country and $1000 usd is nothing and cameras are consider cheap at that price, some youtuber say $3500 is a cheap camera… but a full complete begginer camera at the $500 price is a good idea and the lunching path to a system, more or less like the Canon M50 was… so yes! I think this a good move. I am interested in buying one!
I’m guessing it’s the RF version of the m100 with a dumbed down menu system bc canon thinks we have baby brains.
Your first thought was mine as well.
That is, I see very little reason to buy this camera over just using the smart phone that’s already in my pocket. Higher end bodies and lenses are a different story, but these sub $1000 camera systems are a pretty tough sell against phone cameras being as good as they are these days.
Interchangeable lens camera systems have become either tools for professionals, or luxury items for well-heeled enthusiasts. I see this product fitting neither of those niches.
Wasn’t there a report many years ago saying Canon wants to make a $800 full frame camera?
Because when I woke up this morning I thought, “You know…what I really need is something more entry-level than this R50.” I’ll be able to buy a dozen of these for less than an R1, and still have money left over for some phones that don’t have cameras built in.
In a world where a good mainstream smartphone is north of a grand, there is suddenly room for a camera that costs less than that.
I want to see a wider dynamic range and 4k at 60FPS with no cropping
Not to change subject but if a person buys only one lens such as 24 to 70 or 18 to 180 as example only , why not offer a R10 like with a built in lens like they used too , just a thought
They need a pro apc camera like a mini r 3 as i said before
