Canon seems to be on a roll!
I remember when you talked about the canon R5 rumours i was thinking about this camera and even commenting about it LOL
Good morning, Simon. I was at a camera store grand opening on Friday. Canon had a table set up. Wow! All the gear! I held the new RF 100-300mm. It weighs nothing. Incredible. I asked about the R1. The rep said, well, we know it exists. Canon has confirmed this, but they are still working on it. Should be released next year. I asked about the next R5 firmware update. The reply, shrugged shoulders and a blank stare. Crickets. LOL. Have a great Sunday! I’m off to my first military airshow. I’m hoping to get some nice photos.
Good question, Informative news Thanks Simon
The Canon r50 in Spain, with taxes, costs 870€. That is not cheap by any means and I cannot imagine why anyone would buy that camera at that price.
I don’t know if there is any room for cutting down some specs but definitely there is room for cutting down the price.
Yeahh. At last have cheap lens rf.. cant wait to buy rf28mm instead of rf24 that ridiculas price
I don’t understand 2.8 for primes, thé sony 11mm 1.8 is small and lightweight so why using 2.8 ?
Well in the U.S. it should be priced at $299 or $399. Some people don’t want to fill up their phone with pictures so there’s a place for good inexpensive cameras. But for a few hundred more you can get the R50. Maybe Canon testing the market. 🤷♂️ the 28 f2.8 will finally compete with the Nikon 28 f2.8. It’s about time.
If true Canon sure is making up for lost ground in the mirrorless market.
For this to work, Canon needs to urgently and aggressively build out their RF-S glass collection. OR THEY SHOULD ALLOW THIRD-PARTY MANUFACTURERS TO DO IT FOR THEM. Canon doesn’t realize that this will greatly help their camera sales. For example, they must build an RF-S version of the EF-S 10-18 mm 4.5-5.6 image stabilized lens immediately. This is what vloggers and entry-level videographers are looking for. To think that an entry-level purchaser is going to purchase an adapter so that they can buy eventually discontinued EF glass to complete their projects is bonkers. Nikon, Sony, Panasonic, Fuji, and others are in position to gain significant market share off of Canon’s ridiculous lens approach.
Throw in 10 bit 422 hdrpq and this is unrivalled
Still waiting on the RF 35 1.2L to be announced, and the RF135 1.8L to be restocked 😢. Canon can make a lot of quick easy money from photogs like me just waiting to hand them the $$$.
Apparently, Sony will be announcing the A7Cii in the coming months as well. That is a full frame camera, and one I am interested in seeing what it will offer compared to what Sony has released recently. The year 2023 is turning out to be a huge year of new camera releases. It can be very confusing. And exciting at the same time.
Look at teenagers they are choosing more and more cameras over the phone not sure why because smal point and shoots are having comeback kids like the idea of camera or its some kind of trying to stand out or they want to do things like they were done in the past
People who keep saying smartphone cameras are too good and cheap cameras don’t need to exist don’t get the point. You guys are not looking from other people’s perspective. A R50 is still very expensive to people living in developing countries, and sometimes offering something just 50 or 100 bucks cheaper, can make a difference. That 100 buck which seem like nothing to you can be worth half a month’s salary / living cost to college students or working adults living on the other side of the planet.
The reason why camera sales plunged over the past decade is because those who are not aspiring photographers or content creators, but just want to take better quality photos, no longer need to buy a separate camera from their phone. The number of people who actually want to be content creators (i.e. enthusiasts), on the contrary, are actually increasing. You need to offer cheap ILCs to this group of people who are just starting out, where some of them may still be a high school or college student. That is why every camera brand is pushing for vlogging models. Hobbyists who are passionate about making content are more loyal than an average joe who just wants a better camera – they will be returning customers in the future who come back to you to buy more lenses or upgrades. You cannot neglect this group of people.
There is still no “Rebel” on the R mount. That was always Canon’s gateway camera. The R50 is close but something needs to come in a bit cheaper to satisfy that entry Rebel type camera.
The pandemic has ended and events, traveling and other activities are as before. Besides this Canon wants to own this entry level market leaving other with no option in this shrinking market. On the long run it push other brands to leave this market and having an higher price point for enter their system. Also Canon makes their own sensors and need their manufacturing facilities running as they need to produce a certain quantity of sensors to be profitable.
Thank you Ordinary Filmmaker for the updates. Have a super weekend. 🙂
I have the iPhone 14 pro. I still prefer to shoot pictures with my Canon SX 740.
Hi, Simon. Yes, there is a market for this – the point and shoot market. Many older adults have pocket point and shoots that are now failing. They don’t rely on cellphones for photographs. They need an option to replace them. Simple features and operation and a low price-point will be needed for this market. Canon still offers point and shoots, but like the M-line, is fading them out. Also, parents whose child has become interested in photography are looking for a low price-point option to meet that need. Again, cellphones aren’t the answer. And I’ve discovered that there are four plateaus in pricing for cameras in Canada – all my customers land in one of these: under $500, under $1000, under $5000 and the sky is the limit. They usually make that clear when they walk in the door.
