Canon! Gene Simmons will want a piece of that Kiss pie!
They want a camera cheaper than trheir cell phones, economy sucks right now lower end will sell more.
Any way to pair these results with how rebated and discounted the front runners were during the period? Or for that matter availability metrics. If they were available in a sea of out of stocks, or discounted, or both, it could have skewed the results.
Many people love taking photos but they are not enthusiasts. My friend has a Rebel and a kit lens and still doesn’t know the difference between APS-C and full frame sensor. These consumers are very price sensitive. A few hundred dollars with a kit lens is all they need. They don’t bother changing lens. The kit lens is adequate for them. Canon has good marketing strategy.
It’s great now canon will make more APS-C bodies and lens’s.
I need a light camera for travel and I havd the r6 …the last 2 apc camera are not exactly what I wanted so I was looking at m6 ii ..but can you put rf glass on the m6? I really want to have just one type of glass ..I own 16mm2.8 , 35mm 1.8 and the 28 to 70 2.0 so for me is more than enough ..I do have 2 ef lenses 50 mm 1.4 and the 24 to 27 so I could use these I assume maybe invest I to a wider lense..but how cool it will be to use only one type of lense
I always knew it. At that price point, great kit lens, small, ease of use, give a great shutter click, it’s just a great camera. It’s my Camera B with a Speedbooster attached that I love oh so much, with great 1080 video, and to me, the only thing that could really “beat” it is the Canon R5, my camera A. And man, that thing captures some real “moments.” I’m ever so grateful, and thankful. 🥲🙏
r100 sounds good I may wait
Good insights!
While I have no scientific data to confirm the trends you’ve reported here, Simon, I can offer a bit of anecdotal data. By far, the number of enquiries we get at the local camera store where I work are for the lower end of the DSLR or mirrorless line. By far, folks are generally reluctant to pay more than $2000-$2500 CDN for certainly their first camera kit, but also surprisingly for their next upgrade. By far, most of these enquires are also for Canon and Sony products. Overall, I’m starting to wonder if there really is more market polarization now, or at least a clear price barrier at $2.5K. The data from Japan and my bits suggest maybe so. Or it could be that these entry level products are just more readily available at this time. Thanks for the piece.
Those cameras are on top for a reason It’s because these companies need to tailor to the masses to stay on top. And the masses don’t have the funds or desire for a $4,000-$6k camera, just to do what 90% of the work they take photos of things with their phones. The VAST majority of people are happy with just an affordable entry level camera to pair up along side with their smart phone for easy travel. Heck most are happy with just their smart phone to be honest. The other 10% of the market are professionals.
Also the m6mk2 has been discontinued but that doesn’t take away it’s portability and reliability. Especially putting Sigma F1.4 ( 16, 30, 56) glass still today an excellent choice for folks on a budget and still want quality results. That’s my daily vlogging rig and I have no desire to upgrade anytime soon.
In the UK the advertised prices include 20% sales tax (called VAT) where as in the USA most prices exclude sales tax. So you can often compare prices on a 1$ to £1 basis.
Means nothing.
I heard a rumor that Canon will come out with R6m2 this year!!! At first I didn’t believe it, but as I commented in this very channel recently, Canon has messed up its lineup with inferior specifications on R6 and that’s why they have also delayed releasing RPm2 and Rm2. If the rumor is correct, and to compete with the Sony a7IV and the soon to be released Nikon Z6m3, Canon will first update its R6 before releasing a new RPm2 and Rm2.
simon, need to ask a question? or, maybe just your opinion. when i first bought the R5. i was really disappointed. with all the hype it got and then. all of the problems after. now, almost 2 years later. with all the firmware updates. i find it to be the best hybrid camera on the market. if they did away with the 30 minute record limit. i think it would be the best camera for the dollar!!!!!!! ur thoughts please
The Japanese are very frugal with their money. They buy a good quality camera that is cheap. Sony A6400 from last year. Why that and not the ZV-E10? Built in Flash maybe? Or maybe another scenario where the price has been lowered and they will grab it before it is sold out and not being made anymore. IDK? Hi Simon! Cheers!
What about the Canon R10 and R7? I think they both belong in this post
Looking from the perspective of a professional or fanatic amateur, we always look at the best and latest. But reality is that most consumers are just buying a basic camera and use it only from time to time. If they do not prefer to have a mobile with a good camera. So for me the results are not surprising.
Most consumers in Japan buy a cheap cameras with 1080p video. Shocking, LOL. Sony flexes muscle with the only semi pro camera in the entire top 10.
Hi Simon, Unless the R100 meets our predictions, the “masses” who shop well below $1000 are still well served with the Canon M system. And expecting transition towards R, sticking to EF glass for now makes good sense indeed. But that also applies to EF-S glass I would say .. because for that audience, the R7 may already be “the” dream camera .. and the R7 and R10 will not be forced into crop because they were already born into this mode.
The typical xxD users may indeed one day move to full frame, but that’s already a different group of users.
