Shohei Ohtani’s double that disappeared into the ceiling at Tokyo Dome was also recorded by Hideki Matsui in 2002.
On November 13, 2016, during the fourth game of the Japan National Baseball Team’s training game against the Netherlands National Team at Tokyo Dome, Ohtani (of the Nippon Ham Fighters) hit a double that disappeared into the gap in the ceiling in the seventh inning. According to Tokyo Dome’s special rule, when a hit ball enters a hole or gap in the fair zone of the ceiling, it is recorded as a double.
There have been several cases of balls hitting the ceiling of Tokyo Dome, but it is rare for them not to fall. There has only been one case where a hit ball entered the gap in the ceiling and became a double, which was on July 18, 2002 when Hideki Matsui hit a ball during a Yokohama BayStars game that entered the gap in the ceiling.
