Thanks for covering this! What a historic deal
Ohtani is great example of an athlete who honors his contract. He signed the 2 year extension prior to 2021 season knowing that after a terrible 2020 COVID season, the Angels is the only team that would give him one last chance to be a 2 way player. He didn’t complain about being underpaid after winning MVP and becoming the most marketable player in MLB. He doesn’t like to take days off even after knowing that the Angels aren’t going to make the playoffs. Gotta respect the Angels for paying and Shohei for being a true professional
Angels winning a ring is not going to happen anytime soon simply because there’s no such thing as an Angels culture in their organization and their minor league teams are bare of top talent. Offense does not win championships, pitching does. Ohtani had a 2 HR, 8 RBI game and they lost. They. Lost. Like Forrest Gump, that’s all I have to say about that.
Doesnt matter….insulting and we all know it!
薬物で汚れたMLBを海を渡った侍たちが時間を掛けて立て直した。野茂、イチロー、ダルビシュ、大谷&etc.。ジャッジの活躍をこれなしでは語れまい。
Their best bet would be trading Trout and Ohtani for farm prospects, drafts and young players. Rendon isn’t going anywhere until 2026, unless the contract is bought out. That’ll be a win win for both the team and the two superstars.
Should’ve made $50 mil. The second highest was 27.5 mil.
This deal was done relatively early, once again, Ohtani was generous and left money on the table (he could have pushed for more in arbitration, but he’s not about that kind of drama)
What this deal does is solidify the team payroll picture for the new buyer(s); as team owner Moreno sells the Angels this off-season. It is interesting to note that Aaron Judge almost had to go to arbitration with the Yankees for his equivalent final year under contract, only to receive $22 million (plus incentives…) and the Yankees wanted to offer him something like 17 million. Obviously Ohtani is worth more to his team…. he has more value, or in other words, Ohtani is the Most Valuable Player.
There is no reason why he shouldn’t demand an FA contract that’s worth two salaries; one each for being amongst the top pitcher and hitter. At least 60-70m/year
There are 3 $30 million up players on Angels Team, now that Ohtani will make $30 million. How much more can Angels show their commitment to win from owner side ? THE PROBLEM is Rendon and Trout are not living up to their salary expectation, i.e. they have been on IL a lot for the last 2 years.
Happy for Ohtani, but Angels are not going nowhere next year. Ohtani is the only solid pitcher they got…they need more Pitching, pitching, pitching. just look at Dodgers n Astros’ pitching rotation last 5 years.
ben is absolutely correct. but, i’m still holding to my prediction that the player having the greatest season of all time in 2022 will be voted neither the a.l. mvp nor cy young due to intense east coast bias
agreeing with these two bright, young baseball analysts that ohtani who only just turned 29 yrs deserves to be dealt to the mets, yankees or red sox where he’ll get the opportunity to play after the regular season
$30mil is a great deal for the Angel. The team got 2 players for the price of one.
Arte wants to sell the team before Ohtani leaves. Ohtani is worth so much that Arte understands that this will be the high point to sell. The revenue he brings in, his star power. His ability. The franchise will basically sell itself with Trout and Ohtani there. After next year, if Ohtani does leave. It will be a much harder sell. You’d be buying a team that has been terrible for 7+ years. Would require a full rebuild. With Ohtani there, you at least give the new owner a trade peice for next year. Or someone to build around. Will make it much easier to sell.
