No, S.Ohtani will not win the Cy Young Award, there are only a few more pitching games left so unless he pitches complete games or something amazing, it’ll probably be J.Verlander.

But he should win the MVP award. The WAR or HR argument some media are using against him is misleading. They compare Ohtani’s hitting stats to the best hitter in the AL. Shohei Ohtani is a Starting Pitcher who hits on what should be his days off. ANY hitting he provides is extra value.

WAR is a stat incapable of capturing actual value.

Here is an example…

Ohtani hitter 3 for 5, double,2hrs, 3r, 3rbi
Ohtani pitcher 0 innings pitched
…WAR +.50

Ohtani hitter 0 for 4, 1 walk
Ohtani pitcher 8 innings, 1 run, 0 walks
…WAR +.20

The first example:
+.50 vs a -500 team,
Final game score 10-0,
homeruns, rbis, r, etc. in a blowout game
…valuable for a win…no

Second example:
+.20 vs AL 1st place team
Final game score 2-1
Pitching 8 innings, 1 run, 0 walks, nd
…valuable for a win… YES

The second game is much more valuable, yet the first game produces more WAR.

This shows how WAR favors homeruns and hitters. Also how undervalued pitchers are in WAR rating.

Shohei Ohtani is the most valuable player we have ever seen. Do not be fooled by stats.

Nope. He can’t win the Cy Young award this season and I think he will never win that award. Unless he stops batting, than he would have a serious shot. But ofcourse Shotei doesn’t wanna become ‘just’ an absolute elite pitcher. And we, as real baseball fans, want to see him bat and steal bases too. Othei ias already the best baseball player in history and is far from being done. And maybe the most important thing about Othani is that he is changing the mindset of young boys. Now they know it’s possible to become a outstanding pitcher and batter as well. And a pretty fast runner.
Shohei Othani is an exceptional, multi-functional athlete and is the ultimate inspiration for the young kids.
No doubt he’s gonna be as big as Babe Ruth (if not already), Mohammed Ali, Lionel Messi, Micheal Jordan, Micheal Phelps and a few more.

I just saw a video from “Nothing Personal with ….” I think the reason there is so much argument against Ohtani for MVP is because of the “commercial” potential of the Yankees and the HR records breaking. It’s about BIG money for broadcasters, streaming services and corporations to capitalize on. Now it make sense why seemingly intelligent people are making non-sensible decisions. And they probably have some sponsors that they need to keep happy.
