How does it compare to the K1?
Surprisingly good!
wow!
Thank you Albert!
Thanks Albert. If it really is useable at iso 6400, 12800, 25600 then I’d call that a win. The KP was already exceptional. To me I could use iso 6400 on the KP. If the K3 III gets me to 12800 or 25600 I’ll be more than satisfied.
problem is no body is buying dslr 2021 … if this pentax sensor is 100x better than sony it is still useless as when nobdy is using dslr in 2021 … better off using a film camera
Those video shots are a Massive improvement – used to be, ISO 800 was the highest usable, but that was more a reflection of the limited bitrate used – what bitrate is Quicktime’s Movie Inspector reporting on these clips?
Thanks for the video. Auto focus and high ISO? Well done, those are probably the two areas most people are interested in comparing with the competition. Seems like Pentax have really stepped up their game. It’s been a long wait but looks like it was worth it. 😁
Hi ISO is not important. More important is how the camera feels in your hand. And I think, Pentax has done a good job here, as usual.
To be fair, sony performed better at iso test. Had more details especialy in the trees and the ground.
Very informative video Albert. Great comparison, and impressive results from pentax. Thank you for the content
2:17 By looking at your child’s shoes, does that camera still do line skipping ? In 2021 and for a 2k € flagship, really ???
Question: did the shutter speeds for these exposures match up as well? ISO 3200 is not always ISO 3200. Some cameras smuggle more than others, so the actual ISO is lower than what the camera says it is.
Personally, if this camera has about the same or better noise performance than a fullframe camera with similar sensor tech, then I would highly suspect the camera doing some kind of processing, as was done by the K-1 II as well, even on RAW files. If this is the case, and if you like it, then of course you get that “for free”. But if you don’t like it, if you have your own processing maybe, that you might be able to tweak, maybe it’s not such a good idea? Either way, I’d say Pentax should allow you to turn everything off, and this mode should be used to compare things.
I knew this will happen, that the K3III will be more efficient than many 135 format cameras. Pentax engineers were quite right. The efficiency means achieving the same, or a similar visual performance using the smaller sensor surface. It is possible. I wrote several posts around about it, also on DPR, but which the DPR editors, for example, could not even understand. Like many others geeks who don’t get what the light gathering in photography means, they preach fake science. (100% of geeks are under the impression that larger sensor means “more light”, which is photographic nonsense.)
Nice. Are both shot in RAW or JPG? Was noise reduction ON or OFF for both?
Thanks for this excellent comparison video.
Yep, high ISO is never Pentax brand weakness. Pentax just needs more modern lenses (emphasize MODERN), especially for action photography now. Faster focusing, and super quiet lenses. Without the support of Sigma or Tamron 3rd party, it’s up to them to offer choice. They have plenty of older lenses, but not enough to keep up with the new AF system. The 55-300mm PLM is really the only choice for a really fast focusing (and quiet) lens to keep up with the new body and take advantage of the AF system to the fullest. The 70-210mm f/4 is just a rebadged Tamron, and that lens isn’t the fastest focusing out there by far. SDM lenses are hit and miss, older tech as well. Decent but not as good as the camera is capable. Pentax would have bolstered more support had they introduced a new faster focusing lens alongside the K3 Mark III announcement. There is still time, make a roadmap announcement Pentax, show everyone you also cater to action photographers. Remember, photographers date cameras, but they marry lenses. 🙂
The A7mk3 is a early 2018 release at 1999u$d,its available new now for much less(1699) and add 140 for monster adapter compatible with Pentax.Very soon the Mk4 Sony will come and will probably be close or perhaps equal to the Pentax price.Buying Sony gives access to Sigma/Tamrons ever developing lens range along with Sony’s as well.So the system becomes reasonably priced for a FF.A new Sony menu, state of the art AF are a given.I’ll wait and see what 2K buys.
Thank you, finally a proper review of the new Pentax.
Now my K3 ii looks so lame
