Whoa, my camera’s crooked!
Here’s the backstory… I left the house forgetting to transfer my regular tripod mount from my D7000 to the D850. So I had to use the extra one I carry with me for emergencies. No matter what I try, I can’t attach it both securely AND straight! So I opted for secure over straight. My camera may appear to be sliding off the tripod, but rest assured, it’s completely secure.
Next time I’m out in the field I’ll have an L-Bracket Tripod Mount that will make switching from Portrait to Landscape much smoother.
So tell me, what workarounds have you had to do when out in the field?
What a fun Photo Adventure! I’m enjoying watching you see what your new camera can do. And aren’t those mountains beautiful! 🌲🌲🌲
Perhaps you used the “My Menu” in your D7000? It is the most important ‘user interface’ feature for me. It has the dozen or so menu items I either use for every photo session (changing the image folder number, checking batteries, …) or use twice a year but tend to forget (set Time/Date & Daylight Savings Time).
As setting which the D7000 has, and the D850 gives more options for, is the “d5: Exposure Delay Mode”, especially intended for your genre of photography. [But it’s really annoying having it on when photographing an event…]
Perhaps less important for landscapes, but very useful for some other photography genres is Rating pictures. I have a function button set for that during playback, so pressing that function button and turning the dial gives 1-5 stars. Any time I’m photographing a subject, whether a wedding or portrait session, if I show the person a picture they really like, I immediately give it 3*** so I know that is one of the ones to deliver.
Enjoy your photo adventure with the D850!
It’s nice to see a girl excited about her new toy.
You need as much dynamic range as you need. Rarely is more useful. Usually, when your camera can’t cover the range, you can bracket exposure. Every digital camera I have used has that built in. So does your D850.
I don’t know what the minimum number of pixels a camera needs is, doubtless it varies between users. Canon had four cameras with 20 megapixels at one time, 6D, 80D, 7D Mark II, 1Dx Mark II. I have six (shock!) cameras with 20 megapixels sensors. Five of them have 80 megapixels high resolution modes for use on a tripod. One of them has a 50 megapixels high resolution mode, hand held. Those five also have focus stacking and bracketting. Three of them can bracket using flash. Those three also have live composite, Google it. One has Live ND, the ability to impart motion blur similar to using ND filters. And there’s my Lumix S1R, 47.3 megapixels, 187 megapixels in high resolution.
All of these have IBIS, reducing my reliance on tripods.
Enjoy your D850, but be aware of alternatives. At some point you will go mirrorless. I used smaller cameras for a lighter camera bag, the Lumix S1R was the best camera to continue using some of my very special Canon lenses.
Hi, new viewer here. I was wondering about your gear so I clicked on your “Take a peek at the rest of my hear here:” link but there’s no other links there to see your gear. 🤷🏼♂
Great adventure found it really interesting and your new camera looks amazing such beautiful scenery. really enjoyed the super smooth drone shots especially the one of the creek with the gimbal all the way down whilst rotating awesome
From d7000 to d850 is an unimaginable leap. You have to be shocked. I have the d850 too, it is a great camera. If you read the manual you will learn many many new features. Your excitement about the camera made me to appreciate my camera more. Thank you, happy shooting
Love my D850 – Even though my Z9 is a fantastic camera … 🦘
